Jeancarlos Sanchez’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was brilliant simply brilliant. One of the greatest musicals I’ve ever seen that is both beautiful yet tragic. The colors are spellbinding and I normally hate musicals where all the dialogue is sung but it really worked in this. I guess it helps that it’s in French so I was reading subtitles and wasn’t annoyed by it like in Les Miserables. Also helps that the music and score is INCREDIBLE. Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo are amazing with excellent chemistry. At 90 minutes, this is a perfect way to spend it, and I’ll be rewatching soon. PS… I see you Damien taking inspiration from this film for La La Land.
