Jerome1994’s review published on Letterboxd:
Midsommar was one of my most anticipated of the year especially with how incredible last year’s Hereditary was. This movie does not disappoint at all, in fact it impressed me even more! First off Ari Aster once again does a fantastic job, his direction really feels unique and really captures this disturbing yet comedic atmosphere. The movie is cleverly written with lots of eerie scenes that really get under your skin, the performances are well done but the one who stands out is Florence Pugh. She shows every kind of emotional and we slowly see her go through all types of situations and events that effect her, part of that is the camerawork like Hereditary this film has incredible camerawork that really gives off this disturbing atmosphere and a sense of dread. It shows how the characters are reacting to certain events in great detail, the writing is a work of art it’s creative, smart and very unique. It also has this natural feel to it and really dives into certain scenes extremely well, I was a little scared the comedy was going to ruin this movie but luckily it doesn’t, it’s actually pretty funny and does add a lot to the film. It actually makes the movie have it’s own unique feel, as far as being disturbing I would say this film definitely is. It’s one of those disturbing movies that shows off it’s atmosphere right from the beginning and it stays that way for the entire film, even with the comedic moments I couldn’t help but feel like another certain situation was going to come out of nowhere. That is something I haven’t felt in a good while now, the final act is absolutely insane and really doesn’t hold back at all, it’s one of the most disturbing moments I’ve seen in a film for awhile now. I won’t say much more because I don’t want to potentially give away anything, but Overall Midsommar is a masterpiece it has everything a horror movie should have and really does an incredible job with diving into the characters and their thoughts. If you haven’t seen this film yet please check this one out when you can!
