Are we supposed to experience cinema as cinema, aware of it's narrative and fabricated nature, or are we supposed to 'enter' the story, to get lost in immersion?

My problem with this movie is that it's all just visual spice -- no pun intended -- extreme amounts of nonvisceral visual information, but with no depth to it, no interpretative quality.
We're becoming more visually sophisticated, but less visually articulate.. since when did movies just become a series of cool FX, big sounds, and scale? (My guess: the transition to digital)
