Chan Is Missing

Chan Is Missing ★★★½

Lo-fi L’Avventura riff with two Chinese-American cabbies searching for a vanished colleague. Doubles as anthropological survey of the Chinatown milieu, what appears to be a few documentary scenes (or at least those with non-professionals) slotted in along the main action. Throughline about cultural identity as a burden and blessing, as well as concerted attempt to complicate ideas of national immigrant groups as a monolithic block (battles between communists and nationalists continue on the streets of SF).
