Sprinting forwards and backwards simultaneously on a first viewing makes digesting most any and all narrative elements nearly impossible—but the singular experience of it all is really something to behold. This might be Nolan’s strangest outing yet; meaning it’s also one of the strangest blockbusters I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how this would’ve made money in a normal theatrical climate in the first place. Smart or dumb—it’s immensely confusing to try and process anything happening in front of you. I’m still not sure if that’s a positive or a negative after just one sit with it, but again, there’s no denying I haven’t seen much like it—even by Nolan’s standards. Might be brilliant. Might be garbage. It’s definitely something, and it’s swinging for the fences. So big props for that. All I know is, Kenneth Branagh is bad.
