Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★

Sprawling, exploratory, and irrecoverably messy. Tarantino’s directing simultaneously takes center stage and steals the spotlight.

Like that proverbial old dog struggling to learn new tricks, Tarantino nears self parody, right down to the foot fetishization. With respect to the directors wishes as to not spoil the plot of the film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood most resembles Inglorious Bastards as a kind of historical fiction with a knack for third act violence.

Not all is for naught though, DiCaprio’s performance is strong as fading star, Rick Dalton and Brad Pitt is effective at sharing the screen as his able bodied stunt double.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is in many ways the end of an era - while LA modernizes rapidly, it’s 70’s era ambience slowly fades away. We can only hope that as the times change, Quentin’s old ways do too.
