Film Forum, 3D Version - Alfred Hitchcock used 3D more creatively than almost anyone in the classic 1953-54 3D period, emphasizing depth by placing all kinds of objects--desks, lamps, bottles, books--in front of or behind the characters to make the theatrical setting feel real and lived-in. Hitchcock avoids any gratuitous use of objects being thrust toward the viewer, saving it for maximum impact at the moment when Grace Kelly reaches her hand back toward the camera during her attempted murder. A routine stage murder mystery in 2D becomes a completely different experience in 3D.
