I'm not sure I understood the film the first time around. Came away this second time with what I now feel is a near complete understanding of Lowery's intentions. That is, as complete and understanding as one can expect to surmise. There's still questions, but I'm sure that's intended—annoying as it may be for viewers like me. Still don't vibe with the giants scene. Feels like a creepy sci-fi film all of a sudden instead of fantasy, but other than that scene, I just about love everything else here. A truly wonderful film.

Anthony Perkins's performance as Norman Bates is an all-time greatest turn in the history of filmmaking.

Donnie Darko is funny, it's original, it's mind-boggling, and above all else it is entertaining as hell. Though all these things, in the end it is ultimately too heavy and twisted to be fully understood and, though this may be intentional, it doesn't quite sit well when not enough information is shared. The direction is solid, the story is genius, and Gyllenhaal's performance is impressive for his age. It's an outstanding psychological thriller.

This anti-romantic comedy is one of those rare jewels in which the director's style soars above an otherwise familiar story. Thanks to phenomenal direction, excellent acting, and one hilarious script this film rises above the majority of every other in its genre. It's romantic, it's anti-romantic, it's emotional, and it's hilarious. This is the perfect comedy for those looking for an outside the norm rom-com.
