    Cookie's Fortune

1/3 zany murder mystery where the audience knows everything the characters don't, 1/3 glum southern fable, 1/3 i do not even know what!! impossibly strange and maybe futile to pin down, but Glenn Close is deranged, she all but leapt out of the screen to swallow me whole

    4. April is May, baybee! Watch a movie written or directed by Elaine May. Already a May completionist? Congrats! Rewatch your favorite, watch a movie from one of her frequent collaborators, or maybe check out that Heartbreak Kid remake instead?

i did not enjoy this on any level but there is a wild bit where Allison Janney falls that is the single most surprising thing i've ever seen in a movie about the Clintons

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

completely hideous in every way - the period setting clearly led to cutting back on the suit designs and face puppetry budget - but hard to discount how good Robbie Rist's Michelangelo voice is after getting to fine-tune it over three movies, and i think there's some juice to how much parts of this feel like a hangout movie. it's funny that they brought back Elias Koteas and gave him a second role for no reason, and i do wonder if that also had something to do with all the money going towards recreating feudal Japan (badly!)

    3. With all of the March Madness excitement some of our other watchlists have probably been neglected. Watch a movie from your watchlist or your collection that has gone unwatched the longest.

really excellent little drama. the poster would have you think Ice Cube is a major part but he's just one great piece of one of my favorite ensembles in a while including Michael Boatman, Bernie Casey, M. Emmet Walsh, Elliott Gould and my…

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

"Don't let it end this way, Captain."

of all forms of Star Trek, i love these six movies the most. i love their commitment to wisdom and faith. i love that they follow years of passionate and difficult offscreen history that produce unmatchable performances. i love that the peace they pursue comes not from idealogical synchronicity but in the attempt itself. this is one i'd always written off just a bit - not as seismic as Khan nor entertaining as…
