In his essay "The Home Movie and Space of Communication", Roger Odin outlines five communication spaces of The Home Movie:

1. The Familial Memory Space
2. The Ego Space of Communication
3. The Documentary Space
4. The Collective Memory Space
5. The Authenticity Space

All may speak to why/where/how we make and/or establish what constitutes Home Movies.
