Bacurau 2019
the callousness of the violence could have come off brazen to the point of being numbing but it's contrast with delicately observed details of the community ground the satire in something genuinely moving. it's bizarre and touching and shocking all at the same time. v exciting watching the balancing act play out.

Ready or Not 2019
despite the quite obvious get out parallels - evil rich white in-laws and all - this hits all the necessary notes for a good play on the formula peeele boy established. there's some well judged dark humour, the lead is v good, and they have fun with the inherited wealth/evil sort of angle. moral of the story: don't trust tories.

Ad Astra 2019
though i really didn't go for the voiceover (i think he literally asked 'why am i here?' while gazing tormentedly into space) i can confirm that there was plenty to enjoy: daddy issues brad, some v exciting cinematography, and a super haggard tlj come to mind in particular. also whoever started the scifi lens flare thing has a LOT to answer for.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives 1986
obviously doesn't break much new ground (it's the sixth film in the franchise) but it hits all the right slasher notes as it builds from one well oiled set piece to the next. also plays to the modern day frankenstein angle which i like: jason is just a big sad boy in need of some love.

Pain and Glory 2019
of course the film about a filmmaker angle can alway veer off into pretension but there's a playful, confessional candour here which is very endearing. funny and sad and thought provoking in all the right ways. also found myself inexplicably lusting after an AESTHETIC cave with tiles and religious icons. v good work Pedro 👍
