Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok ★★★★

Quickie:
I just love how much this movie doesn't care about following any kind of set narrative structure, and opts for the "Screw It" attitude of several other recent Marvel films. The only exception is that this is more of an out-and-out comedy than most recent Marvel movies (Guardians still has a very strong emotional core to it). Which is why scenes where exposition fail so much is because they feel pandering to an audience that gets joy out of Thor looking like he's just kind of happy to be there. It's ultimately Taika Waititi that brings a strong sense of style to this otherwise worthless series of films (with 2011's Thor being overwhelmingly mediocre and 2013's Thor: The Dark World being a complete disaster), and once again his way of balancing tone, especially when a majority of this film is clearly improvisation, is terrific. It's certainly not game changing, I mean it's about as basic a story as you get and there's nothing really to grab onto in this film. Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo (who is happily playing a goofball), and Jeff Goldblum (who may have stolen this movie let's be honest) are all great and everyone's just happy to be there and having a great time. Look it's a Thor movie so judging based on that yeah it's pretty good. Although major points taken off for having Bruce Banner wear a Duran Duran shirt and NOT ONCE IS THERE A DURAN DURAN SONG. Also Cate Blanchett is supposed to intimidating, but like she throws knifes. That's her special skill. Solid. Taika Waititi is just a miracle worker.

I guess I should see Doctor Strange but I don't know if I can deal with Benedict's awful accent I dunno.
