Ponniyin Selvan: Part I

Ponniyin Selvan: Part I ★★★★

The Master makes his late David Lean epic and y'all arguing about "GoOsEbUmPs and MaSs MoMeNtS" smfh

ratnam sir continues the masterful staging, blocking and esp. the severe visual economy of CCV, often coming up with indelible images and gestures that really just pack a punch (see: the incredible camerawork during a speech that Aditha Karikalan gives), I am not trying to undermine the typical Indian mainstream stuff that we get, but I am genuinely happy that we got a proper old-school period epic that not just demands the close attention of the viewer, but also rewards it, thank god we are getting a mainstream film (from the greatest living director in India no less) that is so diametrically opposed to the sensibilities of the Western Soyface Industrial Complex in the same year that they've decided to put A Certain Other Film on their pedestal of cringe.
