A Trip to the Moon

A Trip to the Moon ★★★½

Most of the visuals here would still be considered unique, grand and surreal by today’s standards. Even the special effects are made somewhat timeless through hyper-stylization and good execution, people must’ve thought Méliès some sort of wizard at the time.

With that said, are Méliès films compelling watches 120 years later? Not really, as I spend their duration passively admiring the creativity rather than actively engaged in the stories they tell. But there’s a lot to admire no less. And hell, they’re still more engaging than lots of what’s being pooped out nowadays with over a century’s worth of innovation between. And that’s pretty damning.

My mom’s wiener dog threw up on me literally the second this ended. Nothing brings you back to reality quite like that.
