Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ★½

Congrats to JJ for making a movie so lacking in pacing, earned emotional beats, true character development, consequence of action, and actual obstacles for our growing team of protagonists that I lost all hope of a decent movie one minute in.

I was exhausted watching this. I was so angry. Every three minutes we are either introduced to new characters, new worlds, or both, and the once very complex and solid group of protags is forced into less development, stupid one liners, and an endless stream of lackluster battles.

I have never rooted for more people to die simply because JJ took the tired idea that “no one that dies ever truly dies” and wrote a movie so scared to take risks and punish characters for their actions that by the second non-death the audience is begging for a scene, a moment, the smallest beat, of genuine emotional weight. Instead, a few minutes later a new character with a new object with no prior connection to any main character has the power to pull the gang out of a tight spot again and again and again.

There is SO much wrong with this movie from *inhales* the return of the dead to new force healing powers to the random and confusing romantic relationships to the unneeded explanation of Rey’s heritage to relegation of characters like Rose in favor of what? A LOTR/Star Wars crossover? A new droid no one asked for?? REY AND BEN KISSING ARE YOU FCKIN KIDDING ME???????

Such a waste of time and energy. I’m gonna go rewatch The Last Jedi.
