Equally campy in its presentation but impressively terrifying in its storytelling, Malignant is James Wan's magnum opus. Not only by paying homage to classic horror icons such as Dario Argento, David Cronenberg, and Tobe Hooper, and Jaume Collet-Serra in its colorful but grindhouse-esque style. Wan uses many of the filmmaking techniques seen in the Giallo sub-genre and cranks it up a notch. Keep in mind, all is done with a story not seen in horror films since the mid-90s' era of horror filmmaking. Malignant feels like one of the few genre films that have a beating heart to it, made by a filmmaker who has a deep sentimental love for the genre in an era where studio horror films are only meant to turn a profit.
