The storytelling is a bit scattershot: the movie manages to accomplish the feat of meandering for the longest time before ending inconclusively. But parts of the movie are really captivating. Sinatra's timing as a standup comic is only eclipsed by his brilliance as a singer.

Thief of Hearts 1984
A film with a deliciously trashy setup, the film is stylistically on point, with attractive production design by Ferdinando Scarfiotti and a throbbing score by Harold Faltermeyer. Unfortunately, such handsome background elements are saddled with a lackluster script and, even more unforgivable, a cast that generates no heat whatsoever.

Cape Fear 1991
Scorsese’s first foray into the psychological thriller is so bracing and downright terrifying at times, it’s a shame he's only returned to the genre once in the years since. A vastly underrated performance by De Niro dominates the picture, though all the performances are terrific. And Elmer Bernstein’s adaptation of the Bernard Herrmann score from the original film goes a long way towards making the spine tingle.

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood 2019
Elegies usually aren’t this joyful. But when Quentin Tarantino is at the helm, anything is possible. The effort expended to recreate 1969 Los Angeles is awe-inspiring. The performances are uniformly excellent, especially the two leads (Pitt, in particular, is practically a shoo-in for a Supporting Actor nomination ). The pace may seem languid to some, but the off-beat humor of it all keeps the movie going, building to a most satisfying conclusion.
