John Morgan’s review published on Letterboxd:
I was hoping this would be one of those films that I enjoyed more after a rewatch, but it's still just not that interesting to me.
Gloria Swanson is incredibly insane and absolutely carries the film, and I say carries the film because her counterpart William Holden is rather dry and plainly boring. I also get tired of the narration real quick. My least favorite way to be told a story.
The film does start out strong, but it gradually becomes less and less engaging, which is exactly how I remember it from the first time I watched it.
A classic? Yes. An enjoyable film? Eh.
Also feels rather different from the Billy Wilder films I do enoy, so maybe that has something to do with it. Not one I see myself revisiting again anytime soon, unless it's to analyze further why it doesn't work for me. Hey, that's not a bad idea.
Anyway, I'm ready for my close up.
