    Blown away, again!!

I hadn’t watched this in a while so it was time for a re-watch. There’s so much to theorise, but first let me point out the different ways this works for me.

It’s a typical heist movie with a target (Fischer), assembly of a team, planning of the heist, the heist starts but things go wrong (Fischer’s militarised subconscious, Mal), so they need to improvise (down to limbo). There’s also the cliched of “one last job” to…

The real villain is the mayor, he did evil things for his own gain. The shark was just hungry.

For some reason I never watched Jaws in my youth, I honestly don’t know why. I remedied that in the late 90s, but that was my only viewing ever since. While I remember liking it a lot, I didn’t actually remember anything about the movie itself. I knew the popular references and stories about it (the soundtrack obviously, the scars scene,…

My Jackie Chan exploration continues with the first installment of his longest franchise.

While at times it was a bit too silly, it had a good overall plot, with enough twists that kept me guessing. The problem is the execution of some of the scenes and the dialog. The trial is particular is awful, it's not remotely believable nor is it funny.

The action is great on three different levels: Chan's martial arts is obviously very good, but it's also…

I'm trying to get the kids interested in Jackie Chan. They weren't keen on Bruce Lee unfortunately.

They enjoyed this more because of the language and the action/comedy. But they hated Carter. Sounds about right.

Part of my Akira Kurosawa Marathon

    Personal History
This was my first Kurosawa film and it obviously blew me away. I was intimidated by the long run time, but I couldn’t believe how quickly it flew by. After that first watch (on a poor quality DVD) I bought the Criterion DVD, and poured over all the extras. For this revisit I started watching at around 10pm, I only planned to watch 1-2 hours and finish the next day, since I…

Part of my Akira Kurosawa Marathon

After the commercial success of Kagemusha, you’d think Kurosawa wouldn’t have any more problems to find funding for his next film, but that is not so. Luckily he was helped by French producer Serge Silberman, allowing him to make his final epic masterpiece.

    Father and Sons
The story was initially inspired by warlord Mori Motonari, who was famous for his three very loyal sons. Kurosawa wondered what it would have happened if the sons…
