The Photograph ★★★★

A rare theatrically-released romance film made by talented individuals who legitimately seemed to care about making it genuinely romantic as well as actually interesting from a visual point of view, The Photograph sees writer-director Stella Meghie making a rock-solid case for why black love stories don't necessarily need to center around tragedy, trauma, or pain in order to be compelling. From Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield's swoon-worthy interactions and strikingly natural chemistry, to Mark Schwartzbard's lush and vibrant cinematography, to Robert Glasper's dynamic and intoxicating jazz musical score, this is the very definition of a comfort film.
