Joe Bonner’s review published on Letterboxd:
Liquorice pizza is one of those movies you walk into expecting one thing and then walk out with a totally different experience. To me this is probably one of the best coming of age stories I've seen in a very long time with some performances that i can definitely see getting some recognition at the Oscars. Everything from its comedy to its cinematography feel so fresh and original to the point I had to really think about if I liked this movie or not because of how different it feels from a conventional movie but I'm happy to say I firmly fall into the camp of loving this.
However I do have one major gripe with this movie and it's it's pacing, this just feels so disjointed, it feels more like a collection of vignettes than it does a movie but even with that this still somehow managers to capture the sense of Terror, excitement, awkwardness and joy of growing up and not just for a teen moving into young adulthood but also for someone in their mid 20s moving into full maturity.
Liquorice pizza is definitely worth a watch, is it totally crazy and unconventional? Yes. But what you get out of it it's definitely worth it.
