    Cosmos

    ★★

For a low-budget indie film made by a very small crew this looked pretty damn good. The lighting and camerawork were good enough that you could easily be fooled into thinking it was a major release. Unfortunately painfully slow plot and cringeworthy ending keep Cosmos from being as interesting or memorable as other micro-budget projects like Primer. The character drama is too cliche and drawn out to be engaging, and I never really found any of the main trio particularly…

    Midsommar

    ★★★

Ari Aster is clearly a talented director, but it kind of concerns me that he's not made basically the same movie two years in a row. Hereditary and Midsommar are both good, but I'd hate to see him get stuck in a loop and never branch out.

Midsommar does some new things, but ultimately falls into enough too many horror movie cliches to be truly great. I'll start with the good. Perhaps Midsommar's greatest strength is how it builds suspense.…

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    ½

I expected nothing and I was still disappointed. There isn't a single redeeming quality about this movie. At least The Force Awakens had a few instances of good cinematography and special effects, but The Last Jedi doesn't even have that. I'm not exaggerating when I say that every single aspect of this movie is terrible. It's painfully obvious that no one involved in the production of this garbage cared about it. This is not a Star Wars film, it's a…

    Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

    ★★★★

A 21st century sequel/reboot to a beloved and unique 80s movie that actually improves on the original in every way? How often does that happen?
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is the best kind of sequel: it takes what the original did well (the worldbuilding, atmosphere, and action), and uses it as a starting point to do something new. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi/Gothic horror/gritty western setting of the original Vampire Hunter D is expanded on greatly, with new creatures, new settings, and…
