Rewind and Play

Rewind and Play

Thelonious was such an idiosyncratic and unbelievable unique musician, so it is truly pure magic to watch him play. The shots of him doing that here are therefore really enchanting, but obviously drenched in the discomfort of him and the situation he's in. I think Gomis did a great job of portraying exactly that, just by rearranging the footage and therefore switch the perspective into his.

Through the Q&A after the film I learned that the french interviewer was a musician himself, who actually recorded with legends like Clifford Brown, so it's even more disgusting to me that he's so happily participating in that kind of disrespect and exploitation. What a douche...

Powerful film, indeed!
