Now I finally get the reference I had heard in 20+ performances of a Matrix parody musical. (My buddy who saw the show had to point me in the direction of this movie, because I had no idea which Keanu flick was about demons and lung cancer.)
It’s hard to see Keanu as anything but Neo in a more-or-less contemporaneous dark-fantasy actioner heavy on CG, with even more obvious religious overtones. The unscenic poolside climax and diabolus ex machina rob the ending of whatever impact it had been building toward. Did Shia dirty too. Rachel Weisz gets stuck playing two characters with barely any characterization, and spends the end flailing in monster makeup. Tilda Swinton’s entrance at the end felt like a Monty Python edit.
