Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Glass Onion is right around the corner. I already saw the film at TIFF, and you can read my review here.

But because Rian Johnson is one of my favorite filmmakers in the business, I also wanted to rank and discuss his entire filmography, including Glass Onion, from worst to best! Check out that article here!

    The Whale

    ★★★★★

This is it! The Whale! The movie that got Brendan Fraser a six-minute standing ovation at Venice! Surely that’s in no way an over-the-top exaggeration of its quality that sets expectations no film could ever live up to! Seriously, I was taken aback by just how huge the hype around The Whale has been. Darren Aronofsky is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers, so I was excited to see his newest film, but even I was wary going in that…

    The Great Dictator

    ★★★½

The only other Chaplin movie I’ve seen is The Gold Rush. And I think I’m reaching the conclusion that Chaplin’s whole schtick with his Tramp-like characters and physical humor isn’t something I personally get into, even though it’s done really well and clearly shows his talent. I noticed this particularly because when watching The Great Dictator, I was far more interested and entertained when we focused on the actual dictator than when we cut away from him. Though that’s only…

    Freaks

    ★★★½

This is a great idea for a story, and Freaks pulls it off well, if still disappointingly for me. I think the first half doesn’t quite know how to handle its multiple characters without coming across as directionless. But once everything starts honing in on the main issue at hand, the film picks up considerably and leads it to a very satisfying, if still unsettling, conclusion.

But … really, this was one of the most controversial films of its time?…

    INTERSTELLAR: A CINEPHILE AWAKENED

Throughout the majority of my life so far, I enjoyed movies. There were some that I loved and would re-watch constantly, others I hated and swore to never give another try, and some that went in one ear and out the other. Not too much like now, in that sense. However, I didn’t have the level of admiration and love for the art form as a whole that I have now. You wouldn’t have seen me…

BLADE RUNNER 2049: A BEATING HEART IN THE HOLLYWOOD MACHINE

As I had stated many months ago, Interstellar was the film that turned me into a true, if very inexperienced, cinephile. Someone who wanted to follow new films closely, catch up on all that I’d missed, and deeply analyze all of it as well as I could. This also included a closer look at the content creators focused on film, leading me to seek out some of the top names…
