Josh Jommen’s review published on Letterboxd:
One of my all time favorites for a reason. Every time I watch this I get swept up by it in a profound way. This film is an example of many creatively talented people coming together and just knocking it out of the park.
The performances are amazing, Brad Pitt does an amazing job playing the young detective who has a big more to learn. I know it’s hard to say but Spacey gives a stellar performance as John Doe. I don’t like Paltrow all the time but she’s pitch perfect in this. This time around Morgan Freeman really steals the show. His performance contains multitudes and he acts with his eyes constantly, he’s always letting us know how detective Sommerset is feeling , often without words.
One of my favorite settings as well, the brilliantly unnamed city feels like the slimiest most depressing place and you feel trapped there with the characters.
This is definitely one of the movies I’ve seen the most times. I watched it when I was way to young like 11, and it fucked me up big time, but I was madly in love with it. This was prolly the first Fincher movie I saw and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Damn I love this movie.
