The Fly

The Fly ★★★★★

This film is proof that Cronenberg can do lite. While the film gets quite gruesome in the end it remains subtle, simple and polished throughout. I think the reason it works so well is because it only focuses on Brundle and his obsession. There are no social undertones or conspiracy simply a man with an obsession! Much of that may stem from the fact that this is a remake and didn't come straight from Cronenberg's brain, but it is obvious he took certain liberties and made the film his own.

Jeff Goldblum is magnificent as Seth Brundle. This was a part designed for him. The Einstein parallels with the clothing are a nice touch! When the transformation begins it is ridiculous how detailed the body horror becomes. Watching this with my wife for the first time, it was fun watching her squirm when Seth begins pulling out his fingernails and losing his teeth.

This is the film I have seen the most by Cronenberg and although it isn't my favorite it holds a pretty high spot in the fold. This film is simple, gory, and terrifying. The fact of going through a transformation and not being able to control it is frightening and what is born of that in this film will stick with you for the long haul.
