Free Radicals

Free Radicals ★★★★★

Viewed at Christchurch's Len Lye exhibition in an ultimately art-affirming day. When viewed in conjunction with Lye's own kinetic sculpture Blade, the entire conceits behind Lye's entire career become clear: Blade manipulates light so that it bounces off itself in a cacophony of sound interpolating metal presenting the illusion of flame. Free Radicals itself, is, of course, about entropic modes of control: a demand for ordering disorder (other Lye works deal with this exact idea in a more developed manner).
