This is another one of those unexpected treats. I stumbled into this while working on chores in the background, pausing, rewinding, losing track of what I was working on in the yard, then finally sitting still to watch the second half uninterrupted. I loved it.

There are moments in the film that are entirely contrived to get a point across, but it is done in a charming way that in a way knows what it is and isn’t gonna pretend to be something it isn’t.

Dialogue is the potential discomfort that would come from evolving the superficial break-the-awkward-silence small talk you force when spending 10-20 mins with your dental hygienist every 9-12 months.

I wasn't entertained, nor did I experience any significant psychological growth from seeing this film. Interesting performance fodder for some clearly talented actors, but not much of value for the rest of us.

Strange story and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m struggling to understand the intent or the moral of this one - the bonds of adoption are stronger than blood? It’s okay to kill so many if you love someone that wants to escape? It’s okay to kill your real family if you’ve never met them?

Maybe I’m being naive here, but I kept wondering why they couldn’t just arrange for weekend visits and save all the bloodshed.…

Visually stunning. Tragic story daring and ahead of its time for capturing the paranoia-driven fascism of the early 40s in Europe. Very well done.
