Pretty extraordinary. I was a little unsure about the album on first listen but love it in this context.

Wowowow. So this is how a music biopic is supposed to work. If I was more in on classical music I imagine this would be a 4.5/5. I kind of wish that the voice over had also been in German so I could've just read it; Lang's accent was a bit hard for me to understand. I gather from Straub's introductory note that such a version exists?
Super excited for the rest of the Straub/Huillet series on MUBI, seems like it single-handedly makes the subscription worth it.

Rob Letterman sucks, a lot doesn't work, but Pikachu is cool.

  • Under the Silver Lake

    Under the Silver Lake

I love Inherent Vice and PTA is the better filmmaker, but Mitchell gets what I get out of Pynchon. This is roughly what I'd make if I made a movie, though less gross and starring Kathryn Hahn.

Glad someone finally made a good movie for the olds. Sebastian Lelio is going to direct a Best Picture winner, hopefully he doesn't have to sell out to do it.

  • Big Fish

    Big Fish

This rating is probably generous, but I am extremely moved by what it is trying and largely failing to do.

    Mars Attacks!

Making a high budget B movie feels pretty self-defeating - it honestly boggles the mind that it's how Burton wanted to follow up Ed Wood of all things.

  • A Trip to the Moon

    A Trip to the Moon

Watched with some really terrible narration

  • A Walk

    A Walk

Perhaps a strange entry point to Mekas.
Or, perhaps, given I've listened to most episodes of 12 Hour Day twice, an incredibly natural entry point to Mekas.
While it's funny to hear him describe Williamsburg as a primordial ooze, I'm generally unsure of how I feel about the way he talks about Brooklyn. And I could perhaps have done with fewer "there was once a man" stories and more along the lines of the story of the trees at the beginning.
But these are at most moderate quibbles. This shit is right up my alley.

  • Serenity

Steven Knight must be so good at pitching.

  • If Beale Street Could Talk

    If Beale Street Could Talk

Still a perfect movie. Britell's score is an all-timer. It really struck me how every scene in this movie is about love.
