For the first couple episodes, I actually thought this might be something special - downplay the most typical millennial storyline (troubled, drug/alcohol abusing, writer/journalist explores the troubled childhood that made her such a troubled adult) in favor of revitalizing Southern Gothicism, ala True Detective S. 1, and only touching on that oh so troubled past through some very, very well-done editing.
