La Ciénaga

La Ciénaga ★★★★

ASMR cinema? — That’s one way to look at it.

This film has so much mood and atmosphere, and yes that’s mainly due to the use of sound. The sound of the double barrel shotgun going off in the distance, the jingle of the ice cubes and the cluster shuffle of a family trying to co-exist in the mist of a hot, sticky, wet summer.

Unlike Luis Buñuel’s Tristana, the middle finger to the so called bourgeoisie is a little more subtle here but It’s there nevertheless. I mean subtle in the way that we actually sympathize with the characters as we watch and often times relate to their nonchalant alienation.
