"It's just a bunch of hocus pocus" - Max,
The Sanderson sisters are some first class witches in the 1690s who just want to eat children and live forever. When Salem puts the kibosh on their plans through a first class hanging, Winfred sets up a loophole so they can come back 300 years later and try again for eternity. There are some teenagers, a little girl, and a talking cat that have a different plan.
This movie is delightful. I think it works because it is sincere in its approach. There are not super timely references that have lost their way or needless self-referential comments. It is just people trying to create broad halloween humor in fun costumes and settings. I find Sarah Jessica Parker to be especially funny in this but pretty much enjoyed all of the performances. This is ideal PG humor for general audiences and every once in a while I need that instead of watching a head stomped in.
If you haven't seen this already, you should do so, it is a real treat that could only be hated by the most cynical among us.
