Everything Everywhere All at Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once ★★★

Not sure I’m fully on board with these directors and this movie’s quirky low-budget maximalism, the humor oscillates between third rate Rick and Morty gags and genuinely funny absurdity (the fight with a guy who has a phalic shaped award up his ass easily a highlight). But the emotional core and performances are strong enough for me to ultimately enjoy the movie. Yeoh and everyone else are really good but special shout out to Ke Huy Quan who not only killed it in the Hong Kong style action sequences but whose gentle pathos ties together the overarching theme of choosing to fix things with your family instead of letting them fade away from your life. He can do a fine Tony Leung impression too in his and Yeoh’s pretty nifty IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE homage scene.
