Something here just doesn’t click and I don’t know what it is but I just cannot get into this movie no matter what I do. And I feel bad because I'm like 'man if I don’t like this Kurosawa classic maybe I'm doomed' but, I don’t know, I can’t explain it. Equal parts incredibly emotional and deeply hilarious. Like seriously laugh out loud cackling at Tom Hanks’ comedy and the family-oriented emotion that had me near tears. Meg Ryan is the OG, Jonah is king, and Nora Ephron rules. How something can be so masterfully well written with a balance of wit and charm and humour and romance is bonkers. Delicious rom coms are rare and such a treat and I am temporarily soothed from the ongoing pains of the world. Tom Hanks is splendid.

“What you two had, had everything and nothing to do with intelligence.”

This film is almost meditative to me at this point. It’s become somewhat of a prayer, or reverie, a dream-sequence that plays again and again in my head. The first hour, with its delicate music and gorgeous cinematography, felt so utterly calming, like a reflection on my life and Elio’s. I let the lingering of the camera wash over me and felt completely taken in and swept away…
