Burning ★★★★½

A dreamy and haunting film that takes its time to get going, but slowly builds up in a way no film this year has done. The criticism for Burning being too slow is valid; however, I believe that the slow-burn aspect elevates the mystery, ultimately leading to a more satisfying conclusion. The three leads are fantastic with Steven Yeun being the standout. His performance is subtle and mysterious, and it’s hard to completely understand what his true intentions are throughout the film. I can’t forget to mention the stunning cinematography and score, which contribute to the dreamy atmosphere Lee Chang-Dong brilliantly crafted. Burning is my favorite film of the year thus far and I can’t wait to check out the other works of Lee Chang-Dong and Haruki Murakami because they are absolute geniuses. 🔥
