Jack’s review published on Letterboxd:
Where Border succeeded in having some genuine resonance within its perverse genre framework, Holy Spider abandons all of that in service of purely empty revulsion with only a slight political angle. It’s, on a very basic level, Ali Abbasi trying his hand at making his own Zodiac/Memories of Murder, but he fails to possess the restraint that made those films so captivating. He’s instead more interested in shocking the audience than actually digging deep into the psychological and sociopolitical threads at play. Abbasi is undeniably successful in building an unpleasant atmosphere and capturing disturbing imagery, but when everything feels so relentlessly one-note, it’s hard to care at all. Disappointing!
