New film by David Zonana, the director of Workforce, a strong debut film from 2019. A critique on military training destroying young minds. Absolutely love how this film is shot, with gorgeous wide outdoor shots to the carefully crafted crisp interiors, lots of one-takes and phenomenal blocking. I can see the Michel Franco inspiration as he serves as a producer. The script has a great level of realism, but I also wish the second and third acts had a stronger sense of pacing. Things start to feel repetitive. Still, really like the ending and the performances are all genuine.
This feels like David Fincher's shallowest movie in meaning, but that doesn't mean it's bad at all. This is a straightforward thriller, and Fincher's visual design is very purposeful for its constant tension with a single location. The cinematographer being Darius Khondji is not surprising, though I'm not familiar with the other cinematographer Conrad W. Hall's work.
