a masterpiece. it's a tapestry of different genres, woven together to create a sharply coherent image, which in other hands could have been a jumbled mess of colour. the opening scenes work so well as an intriguing yet homely comedy that the film doesn't really need to give anything more - but man, does it give more. every scene is a masterclass in construction. it's unpredictable but not messy, clever but not obnoxious, and funny, but by the end, not fun. quite simply a work of genius and the best film of the year so far.
