James’s review published on Letterboxd:
Tragic romantic melodrama with weighty performances from Gary Cooper and Ukrainian-born Anna Sten, the latter bringing beauty and ambiguous exoticism in the vein of Dietrich or Garbo though she never went on to achieve a similar level of stardom. King Vidor directed some of the finest silent films in Hollywood and though The Wedding Night is comparatively lacking in the script department his direction here is all in service of the material, such as going in for the emotional closeup when needed.
Ralph Bellamy doesn't have a whole lot to do, lumbered with a Polish accent and some boisterous manners, appearing only when the story requires. It's a dated drama with some horrible representations of Eastern European immigrants who are boiled down to stereotypical cliches, but the love story is surprisingly engaging and the Borzage-esque ending puts a wistful spin on a bitter denouement.
