JZB’s review published on Letterboxd:
Her Is the 2013 science fiction/ romance film directed by Spike Jonze and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.
The film takes a look at humanity in a new way, looking at a future with complex AI and the interactions between man and machine. Unlike a movie like Ex Machina, Her focuses more on the inner turmoil and emotions of its characters. The film is less of a warning of the future and more of a discovery of what could be.
Joaquin is astounding playing the main character Theodore. His life’s work is rooted in irony and hypocrisy, as he struggles with communicating in all of his personal relationships, but is known for writing heartfelt and beautiful letters for other people. Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson is at the top of her game playing the AI Samantha, controlling her voice with ample subtleties to convey her thoughts and emotions.
Her succeeds by passing no judgment on its characters, instead telling their stories and allowing the audience to feel the characters’ genuine emotions. A truly incredible piece of work.
