Jake Goldstein-Street’s review published on Letterboxd:
An absolute classic Hollywood musical. I'm partial to WHITE CHRISTMAS, but the choreography and musical numbers in this one are pretty spectacular. The dancing in "Moses Supposes" is unlike anything I've seen on screen before. Kelly and O'Connor move with such enthusiasm throughout the movie and really feel like they're trying hard. It doesn't look effortless and it shouldn't.
Not just a great musical, but it also serves as an interesting look inside the Hollywood studio system at one of its biggest flashpoints: the transition from silent films to "talkies." It's amazing how much THE ARTIST sort of rips this movie off thematically. Hell, Jean Dujardin even looks like Gene Kelly a bit.
