Kielan Ellis’s review published on Letterboxd:
Really well shot, with really creative and imaginative framing, incredible music that I will 100% pick up physically if Mongrel and CBC are smart and give this film the vinyl treatment, but it genuinely makes me sad to say that the rest of this is just…really messy. Performances feel almost intentionally under baked - there’s so much vacant staring and silent pondering, and the few moments where the script gets a chance to come out of the overpowering shadows, its quick spark is immediately extinguished. It’s like they were afraid to show their hand too much, but rather than the usual first feature problem of making your film entirely transparent, Learn To Swim is impassably opaque. I would have loved to love this film. I also would have loved to see more of Toronto captured by this guy.
