A mob movie with half a twist

It seems to be making 2 USPs, both having a more sympathetic mobster in Al Pacino and knowing Depp is working for the cops from the start. It doesn’t quite work. Pacino is more likable and human, but is still a mobster, and Depp seems to like him more than he (or we) should, without seeing enough reasons why. It all becomes rather generic gangster movie, with nothing there to distinguish it from all the other gangster movies out there.

    Nice idea, but nothing special

    What a weird movie

It looks as good as the other ghibli movies. It’s got as much other worldly goings on. It’s got whacky side characters and over the top heroes. It doesn’t have the charm. And that’s about it really, it just doesn’t feel all the way there as a result. It’s still super light and fun and breezy, maybe more so than other ghibli films, but there’s no sense of danger.

It started as a spin off, and it feels like it

    More than just a gimmick.
To only go on about the technical marvel would be to do this film a disservice. The fact that it’s all done in one take is amazing when you stop to think about it, but what’s more amazing is the fact that that doesn’t hold the film back from a great story in and of itself.
Starting out as something akin to the before trilogy, there’s a serious side swerve just as you settle in…

    This ain’t a gimmick

The one shot is for the most part well used here, but really comes to the fore during the intense action scenes. And there are a lot of them. Even the slower scenes feel like something could happen at any moment. A couple of times the effects don’t hold up, but that’s just a minor quibble. The music and cinematography are great, making every technical aspect a stand out. The story is engaging and original enough to make this a special and memorable WW1 film

Not just a technical marvel, but a storytelling one too.
