Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit

There's not a single mean bone in JOJO RABBIT's body, an obviously alarming sign that has, somehow (ehhh we know how lol), been the maypole of all its praise. Was led to believe this was whimsical Nazi Germany as seen through the eyes of a child; literally the only way for any of this subpar Anderson mimicry to be acceptable. Waititi made a film about a child, one whose complete bore of an inner life never matches the goofy Hitler delusions.... Taika prancing in the mustache is the only bit of magical realism. Like, what's the point of all this then if your biggest hook is barely utilized?

This is playing the same festivals, often the same nights, as PARASITE, so I'm surprised the hammer hasn't been brought down on how this hard-stop and starts its tones, not bothering to balance for a moment. The true fun of shock satire is not knowing when to giggle. It's a duet: the film performs a high-wire act while the viewer is forced to walk on eggshells -- the comic bits in JOJO may as well be accompanied by a neon "LAUGH!!" sign. Is rightfully being criticized for being too precious, but, wow, is this also way too fucking ordinary. An excruciatingly long search of Jojo's house by the Gestapo is ripped straight from a post SCHINDLER'S LIST holocaust drama cash-grab. And... boy, oh boy, what Scarlet Johansson is doing here completely baffles -- utter chaos, it's like she's been given 20 directions at once. What if the "incredibly strong actress whose weak spot is interviews" ScarJo was replaced with alter ego "I am the transgender tree, arigato" JoScar for a movie.

Useless, counter-productive, and further proof that harsh critique of a subject is rendered null & void the very second you decide to aestheticize it to the point of fetishization -- the final third has a ~horrors of war~ setpiece that's so focused on being shot like cutsey Cuaron that you barely see any blood splatter, any viscera at all. The kid gets cured of Nazism like it was chickenpox. Funny how so many moaned when that fabricated "Disney is worried about JOJO RABBIT!!!!" story got circulated when this feels made in tandem with them from scene 1.
