Put aside the absurdist narrative that deconstructs and then totally embraces Godzilla tropes in great deference to the same kind of collective action that makes the ending of the original so powerful—the CGI rubber monsters in this movie looks fucking rad and strange, working on the same principle of belief suspension that makes the older actual rubber fellas work so well: if it looks like it has weight and texture, we'll buy into the premise that a giant monster is wreaking havoc even if the tech to make such spectacle is obvious (imo, photorealistic kaiju are barely ever transportive). Helps that Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi know how to frame them to make 'em look huge and genuinely pretty scary, but mostly I think it's the fake plastic eyes.
