Suspiria

Suspiria ★★★½

I honestly have zero idea what to make of this. I somewhat expected to hate it but with that sheer ambition, audacity and occasionally breathtaking audiovisual brilliance, I really unambiguously couldn’t. 

I really don’t like Tilda Swinton doing the cartoonish characters with heavy make-up, which I have expressed previously. Josef sounds like a woman and doesn’t look like a human being. That old man subplot somewhat balances the thing, but still feels slightly underdeveloped. The cast is generally very good, with really fine performances from Dakota Johnson and Mia Goth.

The dance scenes and the choreographies are often stunning and the masterful editing is perhaps the biggest highlight of the film, along with Thom Yorke’s haunting score. The sixth act is a knockout, but the epilogue after it feels slightly flat. 

Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria might be a tad overlong and self-indulgent, but at the same time it has a lot of style and it is very original for what is essentially a remake. And it’s only great for the cinema in general that there are these selective few like Guadagnino, who are basically allowed to do whatever the fück they want and who also will.
