It‘s due and singular to Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s force as a director to craft a film that is so gentle, desperate and unapologetically, unashamedly and unjudgementally empathetic while having an unbroken grasp of reality and the courage to confront itself with the harshest of truths. This is a story about winners and losers in the same breath and it‘s carried by a cast that radiates both warmth and coldness with infinite, intersecting radii and in the last 20 minutes of the film Sakura Ando’s presence pierces through the screen and makes every cell in one’s body tremble and it‘s fucking devastating man
