This is by far the worst film I’ve watched in as long as I can remember. Even worse than Demonic by Neil Blomkamp (another massive fall from grace by a previously accomplished director).
There’s lots wrong with this movie (it’s too long, it’s boring, the story is pointless) but the performance by Charlotte Kirk is what drags it into the abyss. Whatever she’s doing on screen is some sort of parody of acting. I mean, it’s like Tommy Wiseau levels…
I’m not a big Shymalan fan, but this was surprisingly good. I can imagine some people feeling let down if they went in expecting a horror film, because it generally doesn’t concern itself with scares (and consistently pulls away from the explicit gore), but as a mystery/thriller/“what-if” kind of story I think it really works. Imagine you’re going to see a feature length Twilight Zone episode and I’d say you’re more on the right track.
The simple but intriguing premise…
The first Conjuring movie was a revelation and reminded us all what a truly well made mainstream horror movie could aspire to. The sequels and spin offs however have kind of veered into the goofy, hokey and downright terrible in some cases.
Thankfully the 3rd ‘mainline’ movie in the series gets things a little bit more back on track by keeping the focus on the Warrens and giving them a pretty good (on the whole) mystery to unravel. The story…
This is a Matrix film for the kind of people that actually enjoyed the ending of LOST, or think A New Nightmare is one of the best Freddy Krueger films, or that Ridley Scott was actually on to something REALLY good with Prometheus and Covenant…
