Tony Kane’s review published on Letterboxd:
When anyone asks me “what’s your favourite film” there’s no stopping to think about it, no hesitation. The answer is easy.
I watched this movie for the first time when I was 8 years old (cheers mum!) and will never forget the experience. By the end of the film, I had so much adrenaline pumping through my tiny body that I was red hot and sweating like crazy. I had to go stand outside in my PJ’s in the cold evening air to cool down!
Following that I spent all my spare time drawing pictures of the Alien from memory, and later from pictures or pausing the VHS at my favourite moments, until I could draw a perfect xenomorph from any angle with my eyes closed. I made every character from the movie (including Ripleys power loader) out of plasticine so I had Aliens toys to play with. When they released actual toys from the film (guess I wasn’t the only 8 year old watching!) I was obsessed with catching the commercial for them in between kids tv shows and would cut out the pictures from catalogues to glue them on cardboard as makeshift toys.
Throughout my teenage years I remained obsessed, and was thankful for the excellent Dark Horse comic books. As an adult I’ve always enjoyed meeting fellow fans who can also recite every line from the movie like lyrics from a favourite song.
Now I have kids of my own, and whilst I might not let them watch it as early as 8 years old, I’m excited to share it with them when the time is right - although I’m bracing myself for when they turn around and say “yeah, it was OK I guess” and break my heart...
Game over man, game over!
